Christine Kuglin, Director of the TIA project at DU, will moderate a break-out session titled Government Data Reporting Standards. Speaker: Paulina Haro, Senior Project Manager, Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) sets accounting standards for states and local governments. GASB is developing a GAAP taxonomy to assist in the implementation of electronic financial reporting for governments. Attend this session to learn about the unique challenges in developing standards for the municipal marketplace to support GAAP financial reporting including government wide financial statements, combining schedules, notes to financial statements (disclosures), required supplementary information. Additional discussions are planned about handling different types of governments, the need for entity specific information, as well as changes in accounting standards over time. Christine Kuglin, Director of the TIA project at DU, will moderate a break-out session with Joel Black, President of the Governmental Accounting Standards Boards. This session will provide an overview of the current projects, research, and activities of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) with focus areas being (1) current projects on infrastructure assets and going concern uncertainty/severe financial stress, (2) monitoring of the impact of technology on governmental financial reporting, (3) early stages of the GASB’s work on a financial statement taxonomy, and (4) the GASB’s post-implementation review process. Included in this session will be a discussion on how the academic community can engage with the GASB and its current activities.

Breakout Session Titled The Digital Leap XBRL’s Pivotal Role in Modernizing Government Reporting. Christine Kuglin, Director of the TIA project at DU along with Amy Cardillo, Metropolitan State University of Denver and Michelle Savage, XBRL US will present their research paper on the Financial Data Transparency Act.

On June 3-5, 2024, the AAA Regions and Public Interest Section will come together for a spring Spark meeting - a digital experience for our members and global community. Presentations will be “live” during the synchronous sessions, and paper presenters will get feedback through discussant presentations and audience engagement.

Sheila Weinberg, founder & CEO, presented to the Chicago Republican Women's Network on the truth about Social Security and the distrust of trust funds. 

On May 9, AARP Illinois hosted “Conversations with Chicago Leaders – A Discussion About Building Wealth and the Future of Social Security” that will focus on the impact of emerging solutions for addressing solvency challenges with Social Security.
